African Water Fern

African Water Fern

(Bolbitis heudelotii) The African Water Fern is Much Like Java Fern.. It unlike other Bolbitis is an absolute true aquatic that rarely occurs above the surface in nature.. It is a moderately slow grower. It is not picky about light levels at all. In lower light the leaves are darker green but in higher light the leaves become a translucent green. It is not really picky about much else. It does well with or without fertilization as well as with or without CO2. Like Java Ferns it does NOT like its tuber and roots buried. Instead, tie it to wood or rock or any decoration and it will grow roots to attach itself. Supposedly it does not like Hard water but I must disagree with that. It may prefer softer water but it has no trouble growing well in very hard water. Water flow over this Plant is appreciated. These are single growth tubers about 2" plus each.

Aponogeton crispus

Aponogeton crispus

this is by far the easiest and least demanding of all the Aponogetons. it will grow and pretty well too, in even an basically unlighted tank.. what more could you ask of an aquarium plant?? If the light is high you may want to occasionally prune a few leaves so it doe s not get too massive. These will reproduce as a single plant in your aquarium too as they are self fertile and one of the easiest Aponogetons to propagate.. The green leaves are heavily ruffled on the edges making it look great in any aquascape. These are medium sized plants.

Aponogeton ulvaceus Sprouting bulb

Aponogeton ulvaceus Sprouting bulb

Aponogetons are bulb plants but the get quite a root structure when growing well. They have wonderful leaves that make a real statement. Aponogeton ulvaceus has bright green almost translucent leaves that kinda roll on the sides. They will eventually come to the top of the tank but never out of the water. Aponogetons like to bloom but do not let them do it. If you see a bloom stalk developing, pinch it off because if they are allowed to bloom successfully then they go into a dormant period with no leaves or growth. They Like Medium Light but can take more and a moderately nutrient rich substrate is helpful. These are nice sized bulbs that are just sprouting.
